Milford, Massachusetts Voters Reject Foxwoods Casino Proposal

Sorry, Foxwoods: it seems you’re not wanted in Massachusetts, either. The Connecticut gambling giant had been soundly defeated at the polls this week, as voters in the city of Milford, Massachusetts decided that they didn’t wish a casino resort in their backyards.

This is now a story that is routine Massachusetts, where voters rejected proposals in East Boston and Palmer earlier this month. In cases like this, Foxwoods had been looking to create a $1 billion complex in the Boston-area city to compete for that region’s sole casino license.

Once the returns that are first coming in, it was clear that the casino vote was not going to go Foxwoods’ way. CEO Scott Butera quickly conceded defeat after the polls closed, telling casino supporters that the vote meant that plans for the casino would absolutely not be moving forward. Once all the votes were in, the margin had been enormous: 6,361 contrary to the plan, and 3,480 for it, or about a 65%-35% split.

Foxwoods invested a sizable sum of money advertising the casino, however it wasn’t enough to convince locals it was a deal that is good the neighborhood economy, apparently.
